Vivienne Westwood Slams Kate Middleton’s Style And Eyeliner

Vivienne Westwood isn’t having any of Kate Middleton’s regular girl schtick.

The great dame of fashion, who before the royal wedding declared that she’d love to dress the princess-to-be, if only when her style “catches up,” had more to say this week about the new duchess’ look. “Let me put it this way,” she said in an interview. “It seems to me that her image is ‘ordinary woman.’ Therefore, High Street shopper. And I just think she should be an extraordinary woman, wherever she gets her clothes from.”

We’ll agree with Westwood on one thing: The high street wardrobe, conspicuous grocery store outings and high-profile wardrobe repeats all seem positioned to offer Middleton up as accessible royalty–a people’s princess for the new millennium.

But, of course, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge is not ordinary. She’s a duchess. But it’s exactly this extraordinary social position, combined with perceived ordinariness, however calculated, that has caused a new generation to a) care a whit about royalty and b) buy up anything and everything Kate wears. While we’d be happy to see Middleton amp things up, wardrobe wise, she is never less that perfectly dressed for the occasion and her own style.

We can agree with the designer on this point, however: “I think she’s got a problem with eye makeup!” said Westwood. “The sharp line around her eyes make her look hard. Either she should be smudgy or wear none.” It’s true, though we think her aspirational hair more than makes up for it.

My personal opinion is if Kate Middleton has found a style that suits her body then she should dress accordingly. The future Princess looks good and has great lines to what she wears. I can’t stand the hat it looks like a misplace after thought and her feet (this is a shoe blog) need to stay covered. Overall she is style that many women can achieve. Let her stay ordinary.
